The Mass Atrocity Research Initiative is a research initiative at the School of International Service at Â鶹´«Ã½.
The Mass Atrocity Research Initiative (MARI) aims to deconstruct the complex dynamics we have witnessed since the 1948 Convention on Genocide, expand our analysis and interpretation of the factors and early indicators of mass atrocities, and create a blueprint for researching and analyzing current and future atrocities through critical and comparative approaches. MARI will be an intellectual space where recognized and less known or explored mass atrocities will be discussed. Its main objective is to create an intellectual hub in the DMV, where students, faculty, practitioners, and policy makers will convene and collaborate on the need to expand our study of mass atrocities.Â

Through each pillar, our scholars critically analyze and enrich existing scholarship while creating collaborative spaces for policymakers, practitioners, and academics to produce work focusing on prevention, nationally and internationally.

We are committed to fostering an inclusive and rich environment where students will strive intellectually and professionally. Using mentoring strategies, students will use the principles learned inside their classrooms and expand them to see their real-life impacts by engaging with scholars, practitioners, activists, and survivors of mass atrocities. The MARI has opportunities for undergraduates and graduate level students to engage and actively contribute to the design and execution of many of the projects in the initiative as well as potentially collaborate in the publications.
