Gender Equity in Higher Education in Postcolonial Ghana Ghana
In Ghana, students will explore women’s empowerment in higher education by partnering with universities like Ashesi University and the University of Ghana. Building on past Alternative Breaks trips, the program will delve into colonial legacies that affect gender equity and identify ways to break down these barriers. Service projects with the Girls Education Initiative of Ghana (GEIG) will focus on fostering supportive academic environments for women, aiming to create a more inclusive system. This program will incorporate dialogues, workshops, and mentorship to strengthen ongoing advocacy efforts.

Joseph Atchulo is a second-year graduate student pursuing a Master’s in Public Administration with a focus on Non-Profit Management. As Program Coordinator for the Community Service Learning Program at AU, he’s driven by a passion for social justice. Joseph is the founder of two nonprofits in Ghana that empower rural women and promote environmental sustainability. His commitment to ESG-related risks and empowerment inspires his role as an Alternative Break leader.
Madeline Brown (She/Her) is a second-year Public Anthropology master’s student from Philadelphia, PA, specializing in social movements and educational equity. As the Programming Graduate Assistant for DC Reads, she is dedicated to combating educational inequities. With experience as a Penn State DC Social Justice Fellow, Maddi is passionate about supporting grassroots organizations and community building. She enjoys concerts, trying new restaurants, outdoor activities, and curating Spotify playlists.
