This program will take students to New Orleans, Louisiana, where they will focus on youth empowerment and reproductive and sexual health. Participants will partner with local organizations, including Women With a Vision, Girls NOLA, and the Institute of Women and Ethnic Studies, to address pressing health disparities, social stigmas, and youth education. Through discussions with LCMC Medical Center, Planned Parenthood, and Tulane University, students will explore how diverse policy approaches can promote positive health outcomes. In addition to community work, cultural activities will include visits to local museums, art galleries, and the French Quarter. This program seeks to understand the unique challenges of New Orleans’ communities and develop adaptable solutions for health and social equity.

Sage Jean-Baptiste is a second-year Public Health Scholar interested in community and policy work. She participates in AU’s Public Health Association and Bolin Scholars Society and has previously engaged in Alternative Breaks. Sage enjoys tennis, reading, writing, singing, and exploring trails in the DMV. She regularly volunteers with youth and is passionate about advocating for education and health. Sage brings her enthusiasm for service and learning to her Alternative Break leadership.
Athena Wooters, a second-year student majoring in International Studies and Economics, interns with the US Trade and Development Agency’s Indo-Pacific team and volunteers with a legal clinic. From Portland, OR, she enjoys the outdoors and has past experience in Search and Rescue. Athena’s interests include learning Japanese, playing the piano, and exploring YouTube rabbit holes. Her dedication to service and equity drives her involvement in Alternative Breaks.
